From the late 1990s, the brave and hardworking people of Thagas village began cutting through the rugged and steep mountains to create a water channel for irrigation. Their aim was simple — to bring life to their farmlands — but the work demanded incredible strength and unity.
After decades of continuous effort, the villagers finally completed this extraordinary channel. The story behind this track reflects determination, courage, and human endurance. Creating a passage through such harsh terrain without road access or modern machinery was nearly impossible, yet the resilient people of Thagas achieved it with their hands and basic tools.
Today, the Death Track of Thagas Valley stands not only as a vital irrigation lifeline but also as one of the most stunning and adventurous trekking routes in Baltistan. It attracts hikers and explorers seeking raw nature, human resilience, and untouched mountain beauty in northern Pakistan.
Trekking to Death Track (Sarfa-Lam)
This unique and newly discovered hiking route is an ideal destination for hikers, trekkers, and climbers. The Haldi Cones range hosts numerous trekking routes and climbing peaks such as Meligo Tower, Fida Tower, Pathan Peak, Sino Tower, and many unnamed, unclimbed towers.
Through the Death Track, trekkers can reach the Pathan Peak Basecamp, one of the most scenic spots in the Haldi Cones region. The basecamp is a one-day hike from Thagas village. The trek is considered moderately difficult, as the path is carved along the middle of sharp and rocky-mountains, resembling a crystal-clear spire.
This extraordinary human-made trail allows visitors to witness both natural and man-made wonders — the breathtaking Haldi Cones, the Saltoro River, Pathan

The journey of this trek starts from Skardu. You can reach Skardu either by air or by road from Islamabad. Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and Airblue operate regular flights from Islamabad, and there are also multiple road options such as bus and car services available to reach Skardu.
After reaching Skardu, you will experience the tourism capital of Pakistan and enjoy the rich Balti traditions. The next day, the journey continues to Thagas village, which is about a 5-hour jeep drive from Skardu. The following morning, the trek proceeds from Thagas towards the Death Track (Sarfa-Lam), continuing up to the Pathan Peak Basecamp.

Ideal Time to Visit Death Track
The ideal time to hike the Death Track (Sarfa-Lam) is from June to November. During this period, the weather remains stable, and the trail is safe and accessible for trekkers. You can easily visit the area and hike all the way up to Pathan Peak Basecamp.
Weather Conditions
The Death Track (Sarfa-Lam) lies at an altitude of 3,000 to 3,400 meters above sea level. From June to August, the weather remains pleasant and ideal for trekking, with clear skies and moderate temperatures. However, from September to November, the weather turns colder, temperatures drop significantly, and conditions at the Pathan Peak Basecamp often reach freezing levels.
What You Need to Hike Sarfa-Lam (Death Track)
• You need strong stamina to hike this track, as it is a narrow path lined with the sharp edges of cliffs.
• Proper trekking shoes with a good grip are essential for the mountainous terrain.
• Warm clothes and jackets are required from September to November. • A trekking pole or stick is very helpful for balance and support. • For videography and photography, bring your camera, mobile, or drone. • During the rainy season, raincoats are essential.
• Haldi Cones is a free zone, so no special permit is required to visit — however, it is highly recommended to hire an expert local guide for safety.
Itinerary of the Trek
Day 1: Arrival in Islamabad
Trans Karakoram staff will welcome you at Islamabad International Airport and transfer you to your hotel.
Day 2: Flight to Skardu
Take a scenic morning flight over the Karakoram Range to the mighty city of Skardu.
Day 3: Drive to Thagas Village and Overnight Camping
Drive to Thagas village, located in the heart of Ghanche District, and spend the night camping near the village.
Day 4: Trek to Death Track and Pathan Peak Basecamp
Begin your trek along the Death Track (Sarfa-Lam) and continue toward Pathan Peak Basecamp.
Day 5: Rest Day at Basecamp
Enjoy a full day of rest and exploration around the scenic Pathan Peak Basecamp.
Day 6: Trek Back to Thagas Village and Drive to Skardu
Trek back to Thagas village and drive onward to Skardu for an overnight stay.
Day 7: Flight Back to Islamabad
