Gondogoro La Trek

Gondogoro La Trek

This trek presents a significant challenge, requiring technical mountaineering skills. The route follows the Baltoro glacier to Concordia and K2 Base Camp then proceeds over the Gondogoro La pass at 5,560m. It is essential to be well prepared for the pass crossing and to have an understanding of what to expect. To learn more about the difficulty of the Gondogoro La pass and the experience required for the K2 Base Camp trek, you can read our Blog article “Everest Base Camp in Nepal versus K2 Base Camp in Pakistan”.

The journey begins with a flight from Islamabad to Skardu, offering breathtaking views of the Karakoram range, including Nanga Parbat. After several nights in Skardu, we take jeep transport to the trek’s starting point at Jhola.

The Baltoro glacier trekking route offers stunning mountain views all the way to Concordia, including Trango Towers, Muztagh Tower, Masherbrum, K2, and Broad Peak. Concordia is referred to as the “Throne Room of the Mountain Gods” by Galen Rowell in his book. Here, we camp and enjoy the unique panorama of 7,000m and 8,000m mountains, with impressive views of K2, the highest peak.

From Concordia, we begin the challenging trek over Gondogoro La. Local teams from Hushe place ropes on the route up and down. Mountaineering skills are required to cross this technical pass, but the views from the top are spectacular. The slender lines of Leila Peak are visible on the Hushe side, and many peaks of the high Karakoram can be seen on the other side.

Each year in mid-July, we organize two groups for K2 Base Camp, starting at the same time in Islamabad. The K2 Base Camp & Concordia group walks back down the Baltoro glacier from Concordia, while the K2 Base Camp & Gondogoro La group crosses the high pass at an altitude of 5,560m.
