The Colonial Great Trigonometric Survey of India named this peak K5. It is also known as the Hidden Peak of the Karakoram due to its remoteness. This peak stands at an altitude of 8080 meters above sea level and is situated on the border of China and Pakistan. Gasherbrum I is the eleventh highest mountain in the world. “Gasherbrum” is a Balti name meaning “beautiful mountain” (where “Gasha” means “beautiful” and “Brum” means “mountain”). Gasherbrum I was first climbed by an American expedition led by Nicolas B. and his team, consisting of eight members, in 1958.
Overview
The journey of the Gasherbrum I expedition starts from Islamabad with a scenic flight to Skardu over the Himalayas, providing enchanting views of Nanga Parbat and the surrounding Karakoram and Himalayan ranges. After a day of rest and preparation, the journey proceeds to Askoli by jeep, the last accessible road point. Early in the morning, the trek begins through the rugged terrain of the valley, and after a challenging five days of trekking, Concordia is reached—the junction of the Baltoro and Gowdin Austin glaciers. Concordia serves as the basecamp for both K2 and Gasherbrum expeditions. The basecamp for Gasherbrum I and II is common for both mountains, extending up to Camp II for both expeditions.
Technicality
Gasherbrum I is far more difficult to climb than Gasherbrum II, and the technicality of the mountains is very high, requiring only highly professional technical skills to conquer the peaks. In the history of Gasherbrum I, only 200 climbers have reached the summit due to its difficulty. This peak cannot be seen from Baltoro because of its remoteness in the Karakoram, while other peaks like K2, Broad Peak, and Gasherbrum II can be easily seen from Concordia.
